Cameco Announces $35,000 for Blind River Food Bank and Blind River Community Centre
(Blind River, Ontario, Canada – April 11, 2022) – Cameco has announced a $35,000 combined donation to the Blind River Food Bank and Blind River Community Centre. The $10,000 for the Food Bank will help the organization sustain the support it provides to local families coping with food insecurity. The $25,000 for the Community Centre will fund the purchase of new sound equipment.
Cameco president and CEO Tim Gitzel was in Blind River today to tour the Food Bank and attend a cheque presentation with the recipients at the Community Centre.
“The Blind River Food Bank and Community Centre provide important services that strengthen the sense of community and belonging,” said Gitzel. “Whether it’s providing food for a neighbour in need or a place to bring the community together for events and sports for our children, these two organizations are doing great work that has a positive impact, and we are proud to be able to lend a hand.”
The Blind River Food Bank is operated entirely by volunteers and assists individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. The $10,000 donation will be used to purchase food supplies and improve storage capacity to help the food bank manage escalating food costs and assist an increasing number of clients.
“Today is another example of Cameco’s continued generosity and support for the Blind River Food Bank and we are truly grateful for this significant contribution,” said Steven Wells, board chair, Blind River Food Bank. “We have always been fortunate to be part of such a giving and thoughtful community that looks after one another. This donation will go a long way to ensure that our local food bank will be able to help residents who are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.”
Like many arenas across Canada, the Blind River Community Centre is a central hub of activity and a gathering place for the people of the Town of Blind River, Mississauga First Nation and surrounding area. The Community Centre provides services to over 17,000 residents in Algoma District with a catchment area from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury and is home to the Blind River Beavers Junior A hockey team, Blind River Minor Hockey and the Blind River Figure Skating Club. The $25,000 donation will be used to replace the aging sound system, which will significantly improve the overall experience at the Community Centre.
"This generous gift from Cameco is a gift to our entire community,” said Mayor Sally Hagman, Town of Blind River. “The Community Centre is at the heart of our town – it’s where we gather, cheer for each other and support one another. This new sound system will make a big difference to the overall experience and is an important accessibility update to the facility.”
